![]() ![]() On the sides of the canvas I simply removed the tape (carefully!) and applied mod podge in the same dripping pattern and sprinkled the glitter mixture on top, again leaving this to dry overnight. The next day we poured off the extra glitter and used the sheet to gather the extras back into the cup. *SIDE NOTE* While the painting was drying we made sure to wipe off any excess texture from the tape, so when we removed the tape from the sides it wouldn’t chip the texture and glitter off from the top. Once the drips were formed with the texture mixture, we heavily coated the wet mixture with the glitter mixture. Take your time but also keep in mind that you want to sprinkle the glitter on while the texture is still wet so the glitter will stick. It is also important to do a variety of thicknesses and lengths in the drips to look more realistic. ![]() My mom did this by dragging the spoon in a downward motion while also making the drips thicker at the top and thinning out towards the bottom. Once I had the top coated solidly with the texture mixture to the point I wanted, I started forming the drips. I then began to solidly cover the top of the canvas, using a spoon, with the paint/salt/mod podge mixture, since I wanted the glitter and texture to be dense at the top and appear to drip down the canvas. Then I poured the glass glitter and fine champagne glitter into a plastic cup and had a plastic spoon ready to go for scooping. We are ready to begin! I started by taping off the side edges of the canvas and putting an old bed sheet down on the table. Ok, so we have the canvas, the glitter, and the paint/salt/mod podge mixture. ![]() I didn’t measure anything specifically with the mixture, but I definitely had more paint than mod podge in the mixture, and then add salt until the mixture is still runny but more of a chunky chili consistency–obviously a pro at describing craft projects! I used a plastic solo cup to mix it in, and also made way too much- oops! I ended up using about half of the cup (see picture below). Now I have the glitter and the canvas but the glitter, even though it is very coarse, still wasn’t enough texture for me, so I came up with the concoction of gloss finish mod podge, coarse sea salt, and metallic champagne paint.I also mixed in some fine champagne glitter I bought from Hobby Lobby to have some variety in the sparkle. After the project was said and done, we had about 2/3 of the bag left so if you recreate this, go with a smaller bag unless you just want some extra to have around. We ended up ordering a pound of the 70 grit (the chunkiest) silver glitter for around $30. After some research we discovered something called German glass glitter, and my world changed! Where has this been my whole life? It comes in a ton of colors and in different grit coarseness. This is really when YouTube came into play. I know some of the specific elements I liked about the Z Gallerie painting were the texture where the glitter was applied (almost like a geode stone) and that the glitter was SUPER sparkly. Next was figuring out how to take this plain canvas and turn it into a glittering masterpiece. There isn’t a sale on their canvases or home decor right now, but they do have 40% off one regular priced item! Here is the link. In order to save money on the canvas (because they can get pricey!) we found a pre-painted canvas at Hobby Lobby in their home decor section, and we happend to be there on a day where all of their pictures were 50% off, so what was originally a $60 picture, we got for $30! I actually found the exact picture on Hobby Lobby’s website. I was inspired specifically by this Z Gallerie painting. However that dream was quickly shattered when I saw the price tag on these babies!!! They ranged anywhere from $400-1,700 depending on the size! I’m sorry but I am definitely not in a place in my life where I can afford to spend that much on an art piece… This got my creative wheels turning and it led me down a trail of endless YouTube videos of how people DIY these paintings, and it turns out there are a lot of other people who don’t want to spend that much on a painting! Let me take you through the steps of how my mom and I created this canvas: Naturally I was put into a trance when I saw these Z Gallerie art pieces that were covered in glitter, and always knew that one day I would have one in my house/apartment. ![]() As all of you can probably guess if you know me or by the name of my blog, I really love glitter and all things that sparkle. ![]()
